ONE OF A KIND

In 2016 the flower buds on the Rhododendrons exceeded anything we had ever seen!

We used our camera to record this exceptional year.

Mason bees become active

The first Mason bees have started  foraging. The blueberry blossoms will be available soon.Rhododendron blossoms and dandelions will do in the meantime.

2012 Mason bee cocoon release

Yesterday some cocoons were moved from the fridge to the field. It doesn’t take the bees long to find some blossoms. They have available rhododendron, dandelion, plum and a few June blueberry blossoms.

Olive the rhododendron is open

Olive blossoms so early that it’s buds usually succumb to winter frost. This week has been mild but not mild enough for the bees to enjoy Olive.

Late rhododendrons and bumblebees

The rhododendrons have been blooming since March but now that worker bumblebees are out foraging the rhododendrons are abuzz with bumblebees. Some honeybees are on the rhodies looking for pollen.

Bumblebee Beauty

This bumblebee is huge with distinctive yellow stripes. Most bumblebees are hard to capture in a picture because they feel obliged  to circle you while buzzing loudly but this bee  posed nicely. Notice the beautiful color of the wing veins.
